Who Scored What?

Below is one numerical representation of the scoring in the 2000 RFL season - broken down by position (99-00 numbers in parentheses).

QBs: 33 guys, 1590 pts /16 /17 = 5.85 ppg per QB (5.15)
RBs: 53 guys, 3813 pts /32 /17 = 7.01 ppg per RB slot (3.84)
WRs: 62 guys, 2713 pts /32 /17 = 4.99 ppg per WR slot (2.97)
TEs: 21 guys, 504 pts /16 /17 = 1.85 ppg per TE (1.29)
PKs: 34 guys, 1909 pts /16 /17 = 7.02 ppg per PK (7.02)

QB1 = 167 pts dculpepper (121)
QB16 = 39 pts bjohnson (33)
.........128 pt diff (88)

culpepper outscored '99 leader (kurt warner) by a whopping 46 pts - leading to the wider gap between QBs #1 and #16.

RB1 = 265 pts mfaulk (153)
RB16 = 111 pts jbettis (54)
.........154 pt diff (99)

even without faulk's 39 bonus pts, he still would have finished with 226 - squashing terrell davis' 1998 record of 201.

RB17 = 111 pts cdillon (51)
RB32 = 33 pts dlevens (18)
..........78 pt diff (33)

getting 2 RBs closer to 1-16 rather than 17-32 made a much bigger difference this year.

WR1 = 155 pts rmoss (110)
WR16 = 75 pts keyjohnson (36)
..........80 pt diff (74)

the net difference between WRs #1 and #16 remained about the same between 2000 (80 pts) and 1999 (74 pts).

WR17 = 72 pts jhorn (33)
WR32 = 24 pts jgreen (18)
..........48 pt diff (15)

shrewdly acquiring a strong #2 WR was a big difference-maker this year - whereas #2 WRs were all relatively worthless in 1999.

TE1 = 99 pts tgonzalez (72)
TE16 = 6 pts pmitchell (6)
.........93 pt diff (66)

the new 3 pt rule made more pts available among TEs, but also seemed to tilt the scales even more in favor of gonzalez and about 5 others.

PK1 = 135 pts mstover (145)
PK16 = 65 pts dbrien (73)
..........70 pt diff (72)

PK points were 1 pt down total (1910 to 1909) from 1999 to 2000.

Below is the ranking of each franchise in terms of overall scoring by position.

Below is some analysis of the impact of the new 3 pt line:

-------------------------------------
3 pt Bonuses by Team by Position Slot
-------------------------------------

Note: for some teams (e.g., gary), it was easy to differentiate between RB1 (edgerrin) and RB2 (rhett, anders, ...).
for other teams (e.g., joebob), a judgment call had to be made between a #1 (c carter) and a #2 (e mccaffrey).
the results are as follows:
TeamRB1RB2WR1WR2TETotal
Gary175105138
Adam171486045
Ali1611810651
Clark161599655

Team ave: 46.5
RB1 ave: 14.31
RB2 ave: 9.81
WR1 ave: 11.25
WR2 ave: 7.88
TE ave: 3.25

some conclusions:
1) #1 RBs were almost a guaranteed 3 pts every week for every team (14.31 out of 17).
2) #1 WRs were tangibly better than 50-50 to get the 3 bonus pts (11.25 vs 8.5).
3) #1 RBs did better than #1 WRs (14.31 to 11.25).
4) The gap between #2s (RBs and WRs) was smaller than the gap between #1s (1.93 to 3.06).
5) There were about 6 TEs were had a decent shot at 3 pts every week.

Without the 3 pt bonus, scoring was up 12.7% this year (27.1 to 30.5).
With the 3 pt bonus, scoring was up 43% (27.1 to 38.7).

TE350504+ 44.0%348- 0.60%+ 44.8%
PK19101909- 0.05%1909- 0.05%

Some conclusions:
1) In '99 the QB ppg average was higher than the RB ppg ave. In '00 the RB ppg ave was higher than the QB ppg ave.

2) In '99 and '00, PKs had a higher ppg ave than QBs and RBs (and obviously WRs and TEs). But the gap closed dramatically between PKs and QBs (without any rule changes), and RBs very nearly passed the PKs (thanks to the new 3 pt line).

3) The *net* effect of the new 3 pt line was best for WRs! TEs and RBs were #2 and #3 respectively.
