Key Moment of Season: 66-57 scrub loss to NBB in Week 10. %$!@#& went on
to lose 4 more - to close the regular season at 6-8.
Comments: After last season's disastrous initiation for 12 Angry Men
(3-14), %$!@#& looked playoff-worthy at 6-3 after 9 1/2 weeks. But
losses to NBB, TET, BO, HTTA and AJU put Gary back in his 10th place.
Drafting Edgerrin with the #1 pick (and unearthing Elvis in round #8)
was nearly good enough for a .500 record, but the rest of Gary's draft
undid any hopes for postseason glory. #2 Kitna floundered for nearly the
entire Seahawk season. #3 Westbrook and #4 Rhett went down with
injuries. #5 Qadry could not carry the #1 WR mantle. #6 LaFleur could
not come close to his '99 season. #7 JMorton could not bear the #2 WR
spotlight. And #9 Elam was lost due to an attempt at some waiver wire
shenanigans.
Pre: 15th, Reg Sea Rec: 12th, Reg Sea PPG: 10th, Post Sea Place: 15th
Key Moment of Season: 54-43 scrub loss to FS in Week 10. CBH went on to
lose 4 more - to finish the regular season at 5-9.
Comments: Adam's Curly Back Hair was showing me something - sitting at
5-4 (and holding the 8th playoff spot) after 9 weeks. But then the
creampuff part of Adam's schedule was over - and consecutive losses to
FS, CB, MN, AJU and HTTA wrapped up CBH's 1st year with a 12th place
standing - a tangible improvement over the 15th place preseason
prediction. Despite picking SDavis over MFaulk with the #2 pick, Adam
did recover nicely by nabbing CGarner in round 3. Beuerlein was a bit of
a reach in round 2. OMare did OK for a 5th rounder. The rest of Adam's
draft wiped out: #4 Rocket, #6 TDwight, #7 PMitchell, #8 ABecht, #9
RLeaf. You might want to stick around past the 9th round next year,
Adam! Players you could have drafted (at the cost of 1 hour of sleep):
Steve Christie, Adrian Murrell, and JuJube Dawson!
Pre: 1st, Reg Sea Rec: 1st, Reg Sea PPG: 1st, Post Sea Place: 1st
Key Moment of Season: when Adam announced SDavis as the #2 pick in the
Draft. Ali quickly snatched Marshall with pick #3, and there was no
stopping HTTA from romping their way through the 2000 season.
Comments: The 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st above explains it all. Robert Smith and
D Culpepper turned out to be excellent picks in rounds 2 and 3. Chrebet
(#4), Wycheck (#5) and Del Greco (#7) filled their roles (i.e., "don't
screw everything up!") adequately. JGarcia (#10) and JGreen (#6) were
traded for EMoulds - the final piece of the double championship puzzle
(turning a potential 3 pt Ags Bowl loss into a 3 pt win). The only
potholes on Ali's yellow brick road... scrub losses in weeks 6 and 8 to
Black Ops and Carpet Bombers. Will Ali dominate again in 2001? Or will
we see a return to the .500 nature of Jock Itch United (7-10) and The
Sallad (9-8)?
Pre: 13th, Reg Sea Rec: 2nd, Reg Sea PPG: 5th, Post Sea Place: 4th
Key Moment of Season: picking Tiki Barber in round 8. Barber finished as
the #14 RB and paired with Eddie George to give AJU the #2 RB attack.
Comments: not far behind the Key Moment noted above are 1) picking
BGriese in round 7, picking GAnderson in round 9, picking DHayes in
round 10, and picking up free agent DMason after Week 5. Eddie George
also had a true monster season. Not such great picks in rounds 2 through
5 (CPickens, vINTy, Thomas Jones and PWarrick) nearly sank AJU. But
Clark showed some quality GM skills in replacing vINTy with
Greasy/Frerotte, pulling TJones in favor of Tiki, and flushing out
Pickens and Warrick with Hayes/Mason/Dawkins/Rice. After struggling to a
6-4 start, AJU won 4 straight to finish 2nd to HTTA in the Steamroller
race. After beating CB in the quarters, AJU fell to NBB on bench pts in
the semis after SKing miraculously got 300 yds in MNM action.
Pre: 4th, Reg Sea Rec: 7th, Reg Sea PPG: 3rd, Post Sea Place: 6th
Key Moment of Season: 56-21 loss to NBB in Week 12 was the start of a 3
game skid to finish regular season at 8-6 - falling all the way from
Week 11's #2 seed to CB's eventual #7 playoff seed.
Comments: At pick #5, Tim was the first GM not to pick a RB - going with
Kurt Warner. Tim also ignored RB in round 2 - going with Jimmy Smith.
Getting TWheatley, RWatters and LSmith in rounds 3, 4 and 7 helped lead
CB to a #4 finish in RB pts. Warner and TGreen carried CB to #2 in QB
pts. Tim was #1 in PK pts (RLongwell), but dead last in TE pts. Waiting
until round 12 to draft his first TE (BCoates) was a dramatic shift from
previous draft plans - calling for 3 TE picks by round 10. CB was
consistently #2 or #3 in team scoring for the entire season, but some
big time bad karma kept this team's W-L record hovering just above the
.500 level.
Pre: 6th, Reg Sea Rec: 4th, Reg Sea PPG: 2nd, Post Sea Place: 3rd
Key Moment of Season: picking up Mike Anderson just after Week 1 -
Anderson hit double digits in 7 of The Sperm's 11 wins.
Comments: After being picked 6th in the preseason poll, Brodz guided his
club to their expected "beyond expectations" performance. The Sperm's
29-21 scrub GOTW victory of FS in Week 12 snapped a 3-game slide and
propelled The Sperm to 4 straight wins - surging up from Week 11's 8th
seed up the playoff seed #4 - and carrying the Sperm to a 35-24
quarterfinal scrub victory over FS. Brodz' strategy of waiting until
rounds 4 and 8 to pick his 2 RBs (Antowain Smith and Travice Prentice)
was very nearly a disaster - as was the release of 9th round pick Ahman
Green. But the Anderson acquisition (along with some production from
Prentice and Brad Hoover) was good enough to pull The Sperm up to #7 in
RB pts. Why did Brodz wait until round 4 for a RB? MHarrison (1),
EMoulds (2) and TGonzalez (3)... that's why. Brodz finished #1 in
combined WR and TE pts.
Pre: 8th, Reg Sea Rec: 14th, Reg Sea PPG: 9th, Post Sea Place: 13th
Key Moment of Season: Not changing his team name led to 1-5 scrub
record! What is this crap about "branding"?!? This is RFL! This isn't
some lame arena where "please remember my name dot com" needs to be on
the tip of everyone's tongue!
Comments: After whining all offseason long about how the new 3 pt line
shifted RFL's favor even more towards RBs, Wally went Manning, MRobinson
and AFreeman in the 1st 3 rounds. Wally then took his RB tandem WDunn
and the other Faulk in rounds 4 and 5. Lo and behold... Wally finished
3rd (behind Adam's SDavis and CGarner and Clark's Eddie and Tiki) in RB
bonus points! Perhaps Wally is much smarter than he looks! But Wally's
draft shrewdness clearly took any hope away of coming up with a new team
name. Evening out the 1-5 scrub record would have turned his 6-11 season
into 10-7 - and probably RFL bucks for both the regular and post-
seasons.
Pre: 12th, Reg Sea Rec: 15th, Reg Sea PPG: 16th, Post Sea Place: 16th
Key Moment of Season: CEnis' 1st carry of the season (against the Vikes)
for 2 yds
Comments: Enis' 2nd carry went for -1 yd. TET's season went down the
drain from there. There were plenty of positive reports on Enis entering
the season - saying that he'd added muscle and trimmed fat. But if a guy
can't get any YAC (yds after contact), he can't tote the pigskin in RFL!
Moss and Keyshawn turned out to be OK picks in rounds 1 and 2 for
newcomer Richard. Trading Keyshawn for Ron Dayne didn't pan out, but you
can't blame Richard for giving it the ol' college (Heisman) try.
TWilkins just couldn't step up in Keyshawn's shoes. Brunell turned out
to be a good 3rd rounder, and Gramatica was a great 7th rounder. The
problem was Enis and Nap Kaufman in rounds 4 and 5. Richard converted
Enis' spot into Dayne, Shaun Alexander and Fred Beasley, but it was
*MUCH* too little too late. At least 4-13 isn't the worst record ever!
Pre: 2nd, Reg Sea Rec: 11th, Reg Sea PPG: 8th, Post Sea Place: 9th
Key Moment of Season: Terrell Davis goes down in Weeks 1, 5 and 11.
Comments: After reaping some high rewards of some serious risk-taking in
1999 (drafting Edgerrin, Ricky Williams and Air McNair in the first 3
rounds), risk management shortcomings bit JoePa in the ass this year.
Although FTaylor (2) came back in Week 4 to finish #5 in RB scoring...
TDavis (1) scored only 21 pts in 5 starts, and JGalloway (3) was KIA in
Week 1. Black Ops stumbled out of the gate with a 1-3 start, but then
evened their record at 3-3. However, the following 5-game massacre took
BO out of the postseason picture. If we'd enacted the "Draft
Sleeper/Keeper" Rule proposed by Commish #2 before the season, JoePa
would have 10th rounder Donovan McNabb to carry into 2001. McNabb looks
like Stan's 1st round pick next year. Torry Holt (4) and Rich Gannon (5)
turned out to be very nice picks for BO.
Pre: 16th, Reg Sea Rec: 13th, Reg Sea PPG: 14th, Post Sea Place: 10th
Key Moment of Season: 48-29 GOTW scrub loss in Week 3 to HTTA put an end
to Shiv's 2-0 start. NP fell to 3-6 and 4-8 after 9 and 12 weeks.
Comments: After being a near-unanimous pick for last place in the
preseason polls, Shiv actually was able to guide NP to 5 regular season
wins. Shiv was able to make one brilliant draft pick - Terrell Owens in
round 5 (after the likes of Derrick Mayes, Peter Warrick and Carl
Pickens), but Shiv's other 11 picks were highly questionable (Favre [too
soon], Alstott [48 pts in 12 starts], Muhsin [no Jeffers], Pittman [69
pts in 11 starts is not too bad], Roland [#11 TE], BConway [#24 PK],
Priest [27 pts in 9 starts], Az Hakim [fumbles even more than Alstott],
Ike, Kent Graham and Daluiso). Shiv has also made a whopping 2
transactions in 2 years - both times replacing PKs with broken legs. The
Desai franchise faithful are becoming more and more vocal about bringing
back Snehal!
Pre: 7th, Reg Sea Rec: 9th, Reg Sea PPG: 12th, Post Sea Place: 11th
Key Moment of Season: 28-27 scrub win over MN in Week 1. Even though it
was a win, it was a sign of things to come - a 3-6 start, and yet
another early season hole a bit too big for Stan to overcome.
Comments: 7th in the preseason poll is quite misleading. Aside from Rod
Smith (5th round) and Joe Horn (7th), TAQAP(tm)'s draft class was
saturated with underperformers. Case in point: 3 of the 5 Bust of the
Draft nominees (SMcNair-1st round, RDayne-2nd, RDudley-3rd) were from
Stan's squad. 4th rounder TGlenn scored all of 3 pts (2 starts) on the
season, but this was due to being stuck behind RSmith and JHorn (as Stan
was #1 in WR pts). 6th and 8th rounders MCloud and JFazande didn't quite
get whiffs of the endzone. Fortunately, Stan was able to generate a
serviceable running attack between 11th rounder James Allen (Enis' early
season backup) and trade acquisition Jamal Lewis (after week 5).
Pre: 14th, Reg Sea Rec: 8th, Reg Sea PPG: 4th, Post Sea Place: 5th
Key Moment of Season: When Ricky Williams went down for the season in
Week 11. Ricky was #3 (behind Edgerrin and Marshall) at the time, and MN
was coming off pt totals of 64, 59, 57 and 63 in weeks 7-10.
Comments: Kevin managed a scrub win in week 12, but then lost twice to
fall to the #8 seed. MN had the look of a serious Ags Bowl contender
after Week 10, but with Terry Allen trying his best to fill in... MN
obviously lost to the #1 seed in the quarters. MN had little respect
coming out of the draft. The top 3 pass catchers were TE SAlexander
(round 5), FSanders (6) and Jake Reed (8). Picking CMartin (1),
RWilliams (2) and Jamal Lewis (4) gave MN a RB trio rivaling CB's
(Wheatley, Watters, LSmith) for best in the league. But the trade of
Jamal for Dayne and Dudley (and the subsequent injury to Ricky Williams)
led to the standings-drop and quarterfinal faceoff against HTTA. 3rd
rounder Bledsoe flopped. 10th rounder Derrick Alexander was a nice find.
Pre: 11th, Reg Sea Rec: 3rd, Reg Sea PPG: 6th, Post Sea Place: 2nd
Key Moment of Season: 39-27 scrub win in Week 8 over NP and 35-32 scrub
win in Week 13 over Mmm. These wins kept NBB's winning streak going to
surge from a 1-4 start to the 3rd seed in playoffs.
Comments: Much was written about the Geriatric Gang drafted by Joebob
(CCarter, DLevens, WWalls, EMcCaffrey, JBettis and CChandelier). But it
was 2 shrewd free agent pickups that carried NBB through their 11-game
winning streak - Ahman Green and Jason Elam. CCarter and McCaffrey
helped lead NBB to the #4 spot in WR pts. JBettis hit double-digits 4
times in his 1st 7 starts, but then only hit that level once more in his
last 9 starts. General consensus among the League Sages is that Joebob
benefitted from the alignment of all his moons this season - similar to
when HAWAAW backed into their Ags Bowl VII victory. The League Sages
fully expect Joebob's franchise to go dormant again for another 4 years.
Pre: 3rd, Reg Sea Rec: 6th, Reg Sea PPG: 11th, Post Sea Place: 8th
Key Moment of Season: 59-26 loss in Week 6 to The Sperm. Humpty Dumpty
had his "great" fall. The 12-game winning streak for Wang's franchise
ended, and the season's 5-0 start was wiped out by a 4-8 finish.
Comments: Of the 4 franchises to pick RBs with their 1st 2 picks (Ali
MFaulk/RSmith, JoePa TDavis/FTaylor, Kevin CMartin/RWilliams, and Wang
ESmith/JStewart), Wang came in 3rd in RB pts - behind Ali and Kevin. If
Terrell Davis had come within 4 pts of TPrentice's 39, JoePa would have
passed Wang, also. 3rd rounder SSharpe performed well during the regular
season, but went scoreless over his last 4 starts - including all 3
postseason games. Sharpe getting outscored 6-0 by KMangum led directly
to FITH's loss in the quarterfinals. 4th rounder AToomer was lost in
FITH's running oriented attack, but flourished under the tutelage of
Cals. Wang came in last in WR pts - continuing the 7-year trend of poor
WR production.
Pre: 5th, Reg Sea Rec: 16th, Reg Sea PPG: 15th, Post Sea Place: 14th
Key Moment of Season: Pulling a fast one on slow-witted Commish Wang by
calling up Kyle Brady and JuJube Dawson to fill empty roster spots after
Week 1 (and bypassing the dibs queue on a technicality).
Comments: The RFL Gods punished Vesh for his devious ways. A list of
punishments...
1) 3-14 record
2) Saying "no" to Wang's offer of Emmitt-Amani for Duce-TimBrown. Duce
went down for the season the next week. Amani blew up a few weeks later.
3) Duce going down for the season.
4) BJ sucking for the whole season.
5) Getting the single-game scoring record in Week 8 - only to have Brodz
break Vesh's record in Week 14.
Vesh has had a hot and cold history in RFL. If his team is a contender,
it is worthy of his attention. If the team gets off to a bad start,
Vesh's focus goes elsewhere.
Pre: 9th, Reg Sea Rec: 5th, Reg Sea PPG: 7th, Post Sea Place: 7th
Key Moment of Season: Publishing Commish Wang's quotes out of context in
the "BUSH-WHACKED!!!" section of CALS' CORNER in WIR11 - and what was up
with that RFL GM Profile?!? FS promptly went on a 1-4 skid - the 1 dubya
being of the scrub variety.
Comments: Cals had a very rough draft this year. Jamal Anderson (1),
Biakabutuka (3), GCrowell (4), McClown (5), Huntley (6), Stacey Mack
(7), Marvcus Pollard (9), Peerless (10), JBlake (11) and Donnell Bennett
(12) made for a major overhaul undertaking during the course of the
season. The Vulture was able to replace Crowell with Toomer, Marvcus
with Jackie, and McNown/Blake with vINTy/Kordell. JamalA and Biakabutt
lasted the entire season, but had to fight off challenges from Peabo and
Skippy Hicks. IBruce (2) and MStover (8) were the 2 picks to perform
well for Cals - who was clearly disappointed with the 5th seed in the
playoffs (and quarterfinal ouster compliments of Brodz).

Who Scored What?
Below is one numerical representation of the scoring in the
2000 RFL season - broken down by position (99-00 numbers in
parentheses).
QBs: 33 guys, 1590 pts /16 /17 = 5.85 ppg per QB (5.15)
RBs: 53 guys, 3813 pts /32 /17 = 7.01 ppg per RB slot (3.84)
WRs: 62 guys, 2713 pts /32 /17 = 4.99 ppg per WR slot (2.97)
TEs: 21 guys, 504 pts /16 /17 = 1.85 ppg per TE (1.29)
PKs: 34 guys, 1909 pts /16 /17 = 7.02 ppg per PK (7.02)
QB1 = 167 pts dculpepper (121)
QB16 = 39 pts bjohnson (33)
.........128 pt diff (88)
culpepper outscored '99 leader (kurt warner) by a whopping 46 pts -
leading to the wider gap between QBs #1 and #16.
RB1 = 265 pts mfaulk (153)
RB16 = 111 pts jbettis (54)
.........154 pt diff (99)
even without faulk's 39 bonus pts, he still would have finished with 226
- squashing terrell davis' 1998 record of 201.
RB17 = 111 pts cdillon (51)
RB32 = 33 pts dlevens (18)
..........78 pt diff (33)
getting 2 RBs closer to 1-16 rather than 17-32 made a much bigger
difference this year.
WR1 = 155 pts rmoss (110)
WR16 = 75 pts keyjohnson (36)
..........80 pt diff (74)
the net difference between WRs #1 and #16 remained about the same
between 2000 (80 pts) and 1999 (74 pts).
WR17 = 72 pts jhorn (33)
WR32 = 24 pts jgreen (18)
..........48 pt diff (15)
shrewdly acquiring a strong #2 WR was a big difference-maker this year -
whereas #2 WRs were all relatively worthless in 1999.
TE1 = 99 pts tgonzalez (72)
TE16 = 6 pts pmitchell (6)
.........93 pt diff (66)
the new 3 pt rule made more pts available among TEs, but also seemed to
tilt the scales even more in favor of gonzalez and about 5 others.
PK1 = 135 pts mstover (145)
PK16 = 65 pts dbrien (73)
..........70 pt diff (72)
PK points were 1 pt down total (1910 to 1909) from 1999 to 2000.
Below is the ranking of each franchise in terms of overall scoring by
position.
