* The ''Pre'' column is not a tribute to the Oregonian middle distance runner of yore. It is Pat's Fearful Preseason Predictions, as requested, to compare how your team turned out with how the guru thought it would prior to Week 1. Enjoy!
2. Willie's Wankers (GM John Wilson)
10-7, 30.1 ppg
The Warriors turned to Wankers in John's 2nd RFL season, and the results
were dramatic: from 3-14 cellar dweller to the 4th highest point total
and the 3rd place playoffs trophy. Tough scrub losses prevented this
talented squad from reaping regular season glory. Stars included Tony
Martin, Jerry Rice, and Terrell Davis.
3. Hooligans a Whompin' and a Whoopin' (GM Joe Pynadath)
12-5, 30.2 ppg
An up & down season ended in Joe's first ever Aglione Bowl triumph.
This perennial playoff-bound GM finally leaped the first-round hurdle
that had thwarted him for years. The HAWAAW attack was led by league
MVP Terry Allen and Playoffs MVP Steve Young.
4. Ghost in a Helmet (GM Kevin Archibald)
7-10, 26.4 ppg
Kevin's enthusiastic rookie campaign, though short of playoff glory,
clearly introduced him as a GM to be reckoned with. Tough draft luck
with Chris Warren & Rodney Hampton gave GIAH trouble out of the gates,
but shrewd player movement kept them in contention throughout the year.
Drew Bledsoe and Jake Reed were GIAH's most solid performers.
5. Pistol Whippers (GM Dave Wang)
11-6, 27.9 ppg
Wang's club garnered little respect from RFL gurus early on, but
consistent play kept them near the top of the standings throughout the
season, and got Wang his money back. Brett Favre was the big star,
while Larry Centers & OJ McDuffie played strong supporting roles.
6. Luscious Brodkin (GM Dave Brodkin)
12-5, 40.4 ppg
Quite possibly the best team ever assembled, but they could not win a
championship. After starting 1-3, they won 9 of their last 10 but that
still wasn't enough to leapfrog out of regular season 2nd place. They
did all they could to win the Ags Bowl, but 45 points and 24 on the
bench wasn't even enough to beat an inspired HAWAAW club. Luscious
featured such talent as Mark Brunell, Curtis Martin, Carl Pickens,
Michael Jackson, and Wesley Walls. Aggressive player movement and
devious trades built this ballclub throughout the year, sufficient to
win Dave the respect of his peers, being named 1996 RFL GM of the Year.
7. Globulants (GM Ashesh Pansuria)
6-11, 26.5 ppg
This team was perceived to be better than their record throughout the
season, but could never string together enough wins to put them in the
playoffs. Marshall Faulk was a bust, but Thurman Thomas, Irving Fryar,
and John Elway delivered enough punch to finish with the 5th highest
point total in the league.
8. Rampaging Gibbons of the Apocalypse (GM Pat Callery)
13-4, 33.4 ppg
After losing their first game, the Gibbons went on a 11-1 tear to run
away with the regular season title. However, the remarkable season took
its toll, as they faltered in the playoffs, losing the last two games of
the year. Ricky Watters, Jerome Bettis, Tim Brown, and Shannon Sharpe
were the Gibbons' big star power.
9. Rumbling Romanians (GM Josh Veshia)
4-13, 21.9 ppg
Josh's rookie season was a major disappointment, as his Romanians
finished in the league cellar. Barry Sanders was the sole bright spot
on this team.
10. Digital Rectal (GM Drew Wagner)
8-9, 24.5 ppg
A remarkable start to the season (6-1) had Drew seeing visions of
Dancing Clowns in his head. But losing 8 of their next 9 helped bring
him back down to earth. Rectal was led by Herman Moore and the ageless
Marcus Allen.
11. Chaka Khan Lovin' Mighty Techno Gremlins (GM Brian Pototo)
6-11, 22.6 ppg
This club had a lackluster season, boasting a lineup that was not quite
the sum of its parts. Unsung stars Karim Abdul-Jabbar, Terance Mathis,
and Derrick Alexander couldn't quite seem to put it all together at the
same time.
12. Rabid Gnomes (GM Lance Harry)
5-12, 19.2 ppg
This team was cursed from the get-go, spilling its top draft picks on
bums Jeff George & KiJana Carter and a underachieving Edgar Bennett. A
pitiful WR corps and a season-long QB contraversy kept them mired in the
celaar until the scrub playoffs, in which they took 2 straight from the
Romanians to leapfrog out of last place. K Jason Elam was the sole
bright spot for this raggedy band.
13. Disgruntled Postal Workers (GM Tim Purwin)
7-10, 25.2 ppg
Many so-called gurus projected this team as a contender before the
season began. After a 4-2 start, a six game losing skid kncoked the
1995 Steamroller champion GM out of contention. Cris Carter and Ben
Coates were the scoring leaders on this team.
14. Closet Cases (GM Stan Wilson)
7-10, 24.5 ppg
The Closet Cases' season parallelled that of DPW. A 4-3 start devolved
into a 6 game losing streak to end their season. Strong QB play from
Mark Brunell, then Vinny Testaverde after Brunell was traded, was the
signature of this team. Eddie George provided a spark at RB.
